Purported N900 PR1.2 Update Changelog Hits the Web

Category: Nokia Reviews    |    73 views    |    Add a Comment  |

Everyone knows that the Nokia N900 PR1.2 update is coming soon. But no one knows what has actually been fixed. Until now.

Maemo Briefs has released what it claims is the PR1.2 changelog – and it’s no small list. And no, there’s no MMS, Ovi Navigation, voice dialing, or portrait mode additions on the list. Keep in mind that it’s always possible these or other features will hit the list by the time PR1.2 releases.

Among the bug fix highlights:

* 8454 Placing a call in portrait mode gets desktop stuck in portrait mode upon exit.
* 5388 Allow keyboard input to jump to an entry in a list (“type ahead”)
* 5716 Popup menus with rounded corners missing transparency
* 6506 Hardware keys do not change volume when status menu in foreground & browser in background
* 8683 Browser crashes when browsing some websites
* 5357 Does not accept GSM (USSD) Codes starting with *#
* 5417 Delete button greyed out when opening from notification popup (Email)
* 6372 Sometimes photos are not deleted if you delete directly after taking them
* 7124 media player loses cover art if song changes while screen is locked
* 8698 camera does not have the night mode function
* 5337 Ovi Maps gives up finding GPS lock too soon
* 8004 PR1.1 has introduced a battery drain bug (not wifi related)

Check out the entire changelog here.

What’s Nokia and Newegg Up To?

Category: Nokia Reviews    |    70 views    |    Add a Comment  |
Happy Easter, from Nokia & Newegg to you.

Happy Easter, from Nokia & Newegg to you.

A little something arrived in my mailbox yesterday…(updated!)

A large Cadbury “crunchie” Easter egg, courtesy of the fine folks over at Womworld. That was mysterious in itself, but included in the box was a message that read “We just wanted to let you know of a new exciting project between Nokia & Newegg.com…keep your eyes peeled for more information!”

Interesting.

The million dollar question is, of course, just what is this new project/partnership? Nokia makes cell phones and accessories, and Newegg is one of the Web’s favorite retailers (it’s definitely one of mine, next to Amazon). The connection seems pretty obvious, but Newegg has been selling Nokia products since 2006. Nothing new there. That leaves us with two possibilities:

1. A phone (or phones, or a completely different device like a media player or tablet or netbook) being exclusively sold by Newegg. Update: According to Reuters, Nokia is working on a tablet for Fall release.
2. Newegg, like Dell, wants to get into the mobile phone business and is working with Nokia to make it happen. (doubtful)

I’d go with the first. I’m starting to doubt that Nokia would sell phones through Newegg exclusively, since that’s just not newsworthy at all. Instead, I’d expect it to be something different – think Nokia Booklets selling at Best Buy retail stores.

Either way, there’s more at work here than I can really figure out. Ah well – we’ll just have to wait and see.

Playing PSX Games on the N900, Verdict: Better Luck Next Time

Category: Nokia Reviews    |    79 views    |    Add a Comment  |
Running PCSX on the N900

Running PCSX on the N900…eh.

If you’ve been following the repositories (specifically extras-dev), you might have noticed two new additions to the Games category: PCSX and PSX4All. Both are Playstation 1 (PSX) emulators with the ability to run PSX CD images from the comfort of your N900. Unfortunately, I couldn’t download PSX4All thanks to some missing libraries, so the following is based on my impressions with PCSX. How did it fare?

And the answer is…not too well.

I tested four games with PCSX:

Chrono Cross: 2.8 average fps, super slow but graphics are actually pretty decent. NOT PLAYABLE though.
Metal Gear Solid: hangs at PIRACY warning. Definitely NOT PLAYABLE.
Ridge Racer 4: hangs at Namco intro screen. NOPE NOT PLAYABLE.
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX: hangs after choosing a character, but the title screen music sounds great. Still NOT PLAYABLE.

It looks like Playstation emulation on the N900 has a long, long way to go.

One problem with PCSX is that you can’t disable sound. That’s a pretty major shortcoming. There’s a ton of other graphics, sound, and CD emulation options, yet nothing to actually turn off the sound to save a couple fps.

…which brings me to another point. As someone who has always championed emulators on mobile phones,
I’m not that excited about PCSX. It’s not that I wouldn’t love to play some FF7 on my N900; rather, it’s just that the performance is simply terrible (I couldn’t get more than 3.7 max fps in any of my tests, even during title screens and such) that it’s hard to see PSX emulation ever improving to the point of playability. Consider: if PCSX ran games three times faster, it would still be a measly 9 fps. NOT PLAYABLE

And battery drain is another issue. According to BatteryEye, it’s pretty severe.

Of course, there’s an important caveat here: this is only one of two PSX emulators out there right now. It’s possible, though unlikely, that PSX4All will offer noticeably better performance than PCSX. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime I’ll stick to Xploder and Gweled.
